These portraits of people, with whom my relationships changed most dramatically, and perhaps tragically, after graduation, are meant as enshrinements. As a result, each portrait has a solemn and sometimes tragic quality, but is also inscribed with a buoyant importance and momentousness.The disembodied hands symbolize many things but mainly detachment and tense but strong connections between two entities (clasped hands). They also suggest imagery traditionally associated with churches and funerals – places meant for coping with loss and memorials.
